Lost In Translation
Mrs. C and I watched the first half of Lost in Translation last night and hope to finish it tonight. It brought back some of the loneliness and disorientation of those long trips to Tokyo. I do not want to do it anymore and have great admiration for people my age who still have it in them.
Scarlet Johansson reminded me of one of those college girls who spend 3 of their four years alone in their dorm rooms listening to the Moody Blues. Her character seems younger than a woman who has been married for 2 years. In my brief exposure to her she seems like a 3 dimensional Liv Tyler.
It’s hard to believe Bill Murray could pull off as sensitive a nuance as when he tucked in Scarlet Johansson after their night as stoned out partiers. The scenes where she wonders into the arcade reminded me of a passage in Kenneth Kenniston's book “The Uncommitted” where he mentions the strange affinity of alienated youth for neon lights.
Murray seems to be finally able to have it both ways. The shticks are subtler and shorter. The filming of the commercial for Suntory scotch, in which Murray must mime “Loger Moore and the Lat Pack”, is drop dead funny but not obnoxious or overbearing.
